To the surprise of no one and the delight of everyone, Bethesda offered an in-depth look at Fallout 4 during their E3 2015 press conference. First and foremost: The game will release for PS4, Xbox One and PC November 10, 2015. A Pip Boy Collector’s Edition will also be available; among other goodies, this includes a smartphone-housing Pip Boy replica which, combined with the game’s mobile app, functions exactly as the in-game model, inventory management and all. The mobile app will be available free and will function perfectly on phones alone, of course. As Executive Producer Todd Howard put it: “As far as stupid gimmicks go, it’s the best ****ing one I’ve ever seen.”
Fallout 4 is indeed set in Boston, Howard confirmed, and stars the sole survivor of Vault 111, who emerges 200 years after the fateful blast. Character creation has seen an overhaul for Fallout 4. A real-time sculpting system has done away with sliders, instead opting for a click-and-change system backed by presets and individual options. Male and female characters will be playable, and the game will even generate a child based on who you create. Below you can see a before and after comparison of the default protagonist and a custom variant created during the show.
Many traditional Fallout mechanics will be returning for Fallout 4. SPECIAL stats are identical, first- and third-person perspectives are available, VATS are sticking around and conversations are still branching. Standout wrinkles include contextual commands for your canine companion, who can aid you in exploration and combat, and travel by helicopter and, perhaps, other vehicles. But the meat of the matter is in the crafting.
Fallout 4 is packing over 50 base weapons and 700 modifications, which can be applied liberally to create a truly custom arsenal. A laser pistol, for instance, can be stocked and stretched into a sniper laser rifle. This works in tandem with a redone dismantling system offering multiple recipes for items, letting you put heretofore junk items to good use as substitute materials. Power Armor modifications offer a similar layer of depth, not to mention literal layers of defense, all customizable. From the looks of things–namely jetpacks and custom UI–Power Armor will play a much bigger role in Fallout 4.
