With its best performance of the season at the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday, Ferrari regained third place in the constructors’ championship, which the Italian team had lost to Williams after the last race.
Both Ferrari drivers recorded their best results of the season so far with Fernando Alonso clinching only his second podium of the campaign, after a gap of six races, with P2 while teammate Kimi Raikkonen finished sixth.
“This podium means a lot to me and the whole team, because after so many difficult races, we managed to get the most out of everything, also taking a few risks and second place seems like a win,” said Alonso, who was leading three laps from the end but lost out to Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo after his tyres started to suffer.
“To do 31 laps at the end on used soft tyres was a great challenge,” said the Spaniard, who had opted to stop twice in the race. “At that point, the strategy suggested that if we had made a third stop, we could have finished fourth, but we decided to run to the flag instead.”
But Alonso, who is now the only one to have finished in the points in every race this season, admitted that the “unusual” circumstances in Hungary helped as the early rain, two safety car periods and one of the most difficult circuits to overtake played in his favour.
Alonso is just the third driver this season – after Riccardo and Valtteri Bottas – to finish ahead of a Mercedes in race.
RESULTS WILL COME FOR RAIKKONEN
Raikkonen, who had scored just two points in the last five Grands Prix and is the only driver yet to upstage his teammate in a race this season, climbed ten places from the starting grid to collect eight points.Ferrari Duo Record Season's Best Results In Hungary, 9.0 out of 10 based on 1 rating
