Ready for one more Spider-Man reboot? Now that the House of Ideas has its most popular character back in the fold, it needed to recast and find a new director. Today it announced both of those steps are complete. Tom Holland, previously seen in “The Impossible” and “Wolf Hall” will be the new Peter Parker.
After two Spideys in their 20s playing teenagers, the casting call here was for an actor between the ages of 14-18. Holland’s 19, so the studio figured close enough. According to Marvel’s release, Holland blew them away with his screen tests, emerging from a field that reportedly contained the likes of Asa Butterfield, Nat Wolff, Timothee Chalomet and Liam James. The character is slated to debut with a brief cameo in “Captain America: Civil War” before his own movie appears July 28, 2017.
Jon Watts earned the right to sit in the director’s chair. His “Cop Car” starring Kevin Bacon earned rave reviews at Sundance. Marvel’s movie chief Kevin Feige said Watts brings the same fresh perspective as directors like Joss Whedon , James Gunn and the Russo Bros.
