Samsung today launched its next big Galaxy, the Galaxy Note 7, to take on the upcoming iPhones from Apple. The Galaxy Note 7 is based on the Galaxy S7 edge — released earlier this year — but comes with minor improvements and the usual suite of Note features and apps.
Sporting a 5.7-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED screen on the front that is curved on both edges, the Galaxy Note 7 is among the first devices in the market to make use of Corning’s Gorilla Glass 5. Like the Galaxy S7/edge, the Note 7 also features an IP68 certification that makes it dust and water-resistant. The handset sports the same design as its predecessor — a metallic chassis that is covered with 3D curved glass at the front and back.
Inside, the Galaxy Note 7 shares the same set of internals as found on the Galaxy S7. This includes Samsung’s own Exynos 8890 chipset clocked at 2.4GHz, 4GB LPDDR4 RAM, and, a microSD card slot. Unlike Apple which continues to offer the iPhone with only 16GB of base storage, Samsung has gone ahead and equipped the Galaxy Note 7 with 64GB of storage space. There is no other SKU of the device with lower storage, and with a microSD card slot, one can further expand its storage capacity. All this is powered by a 3500mAh battery.
The Note 7 comes with a 3500mAh battery that is capable of being charged from 0-50% in only around 30 minutes. It also features dual-band Wi-Fi b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.2, NFC, Cat. 12 LTE, 3.5mm audio jack, USB Type-C port, and GPS. The Note 7 also comes with a new S Pen that features 4096 pressure points and a latency of only 50ms. The S Pen itself is also waterproof, so it can survive being dunked in water and also works underwater and with wet screens to a certain extent. The Note 7 is also the first smartphone in the world to feature an iris scanner that can be used for unlocking the phone and even for verifying Samsung Pay transactions. Samsung also announced Samsung Pass that will allow Note 7 users to log in to supported banking apps using the iris scanner.
