3DS becomes eighth Nintendo system to hit 15m U.S. sales

While Nintendo’s Wii U has been catching its breath, finally able to after treading water for so many months, the 3DS has been thundering along unabated. In a recent statement, Nintendo revealed that its 3DS handheld line, which includes the original, New and XL models, has hit the 15 million milestone for sales in the United States. 3DS is the eighth Nintendo system to do so, putting it in the same bracket as the original DS, Game Boy Advance and others. Collectively, Nintendo has moved 270 million hardware units in the U.S. market since the release of the original Nintendo Entertainment System.

Though 3DS has always dominated the handheld market, it has proven particularly strong in the first half of 2015. The period has yielded an increase in sales of more than 50 percent compared to 2014. Naturally, New Nintendo 3DS XL sales were a strong factor in this. New 3DS XL launched just this past February but has already begun to find a foothold. Given the 3DS’ substantial 2015 software lineup, Nintendo expects the remainder of the year to be equally fruitful.

“With more great games on the way and a hardware system for every type of gamer, 2015 is shaping up to be one of the stronger years yet for Nintendo 3DS in the United States.” Incidentally, this will likely be the Wii U’s best year yet as well. In any case, E3 2015 is sure to bring shape to Nintendo’s financial and software forecast, so we’ll have to hold off assuming until then.
