App Rating Prompts Are About To Get Way Better in iOS 11

Up until now, iOS developers have used custom pop-ups to prompt users to rate their app after which they would be redirected to the App Store to review the app. Apple did introduce a new App Store rating API with iOS 10.3 but made it optional in nature to use.

Now, the company has updated the App Store policy to ensure that it is mandatory for developers to use the official API from Apple for letting users review apps. Using the official API has the benefit of users being able to leave their review for an app from within the app itself. This will make it easier and faster for users to review an app, which should ultimately lead to an increase in user reviews for apps on the App Store.

Right now, due to the custom pop-up implementation used by developers, a user is redirected to the App Store if they want to leave their review.

To ensure that developers don’t end up abusing this API, Apple is placing a restriction on how many times developers can use this API. The app review prompt can only be displayed three times a year, and once a user has left a review, the app cannot show any app review prompt for at least until a year and after a new version is released.

In addition, iOS 11 also lets users disable the option of being prompted by apps to review apps completely. The option is located in Settings -> iTunes and App Store -> In-App Ratings & Reviews.

With developers now being able to retain their app reviews even after pushing an update to it with the redesigned iOS 11 App Store and the new in-app rating API from Apple, app reviews from users are bound to increase once iOS 11 is released later this year.
