Google Drive Issue Stopping Microsoft Word Documents From Opening in Apple’s Files App

A lingering issue within the Google Drive iOS app is causing problems for folks who are trying to open Microsoft Word documents.

As surfaced by MacRumors, the issue is not just rooted in Apple’s new Files app, either, as it even causes Word documents to not open within the iOS 10-based iCloud Drive. In each case, when trying to open a Microsoft Word document via the Google Drive app, it will instead prompt the user to save the file there instead. This is the case for .docx files, and only happens when the user tries to open the document from the Files or the iCloud Drive app.

The original report states that the problem can be duplicated, and indicates that the issue is probably not with the Apple Files app, or iCloud Drive for users who haven’t switched over yet, but instead probably lies within the Google Drive app itself.

As it stands now, apparently the only fix is to completely uninstall the Google Drive app.

The issue has cropped up for several iOS users ever since Google updated the Drive iOS app earlier this month. Many thought it might be fixed with the update to iOS 11 and the subsequent shift to the Apple Files app, but that is apparently not the case.

Google has yet to comment on the issue, so it does not look like there will be a fix on that side of things anytime soon.
