Google Unveils 5-inch Pixel 2 and 6-inch Pixel XL 2 with Active Edge, No Headphone Jack

Google today unveiled the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL to take on Apple’s 2017 iPhone lineup. The latest generation Pixel handsets from the company feature a cutting-edge camera, a water-resistant build, and faster internals than their predecessors.

The Pixel 2 is the smaller of the two devices announced today and features a 5-inch Full HD 16:9 AMOLED display. The bigger Pixel 2 XL features a 6-inch QHD+ P-OLED display with a taller 18:9 aspect ratio display. The smaller Pixel 2 does not feature a bezel-less design, while the bigger Pixel 2 XL features significantly smaller bezels than the original Pixel XL. Both handsets feature an IP68 certification which makes them dust and water-resistant. Like their predecessors, both phones also feature a glass RF window at the rear. Other common features of both handsets include a 3D arc cover glass at the front, IP67 certification, stereo front-facing speakers, and Always-on Display.

Internally, the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 chipset, 4GB RAM, 64/128GB storage, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, GPS, and USB-C connectivity. The smaller Pixel 2 comes with a 2700mAh battery, while the larger Pixel 2 XL features a 3520mAh battery. Both phones support fast charging. At the rear, the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL feature a 12.2MP f/1.8 shooter with OIS, EIS, and Dual-Pixel Autofocus. Last year, Google set a new benchmark with the camera performance of its Pixel handsets and this year, the company is again breaking all records. DxOMark has already rated the Pixel 2’s camera at 98, which is higher than the score of 94 received by iPhone 8 Plus and Galaxy Note 8. Despite coming with a single camera setup, Google is also able to offer a Portrait mode on its new Pixel handsets using machine learning. The front 8MP shooter also offers Portrait mode.

The new Pixels also come with Active Edge, a squeezable frame which one can squeeze to quickly activate Google Assistant. Google is using machine learning to ensure that false squeezes are not registered, with Active Edge also being compatible with third-party cases.

On the software front, the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL will run on Android 8.0 Oreo. They will come with exclusive access to Google Lens and AR stickers. Google is also promising three years of security and OS updates for the handsets.
