Beats 1 has been streaming 24 hours a day on Apple Music for well over a month now, and during that time, Quartz has been keeping an eye on all of the music that gets played. Hip hop is by far the most popular genre so far, while The Weeknd and Drake are the artists that get played most.
Quartz analyzed data on more than 12,000 tracks that were played on Beats 1 from early July to early August using an open-source tool developed by Callum Jones. It found that The Weeknd is the most played artist, with 180 plays so far, while Drake comes in second with 163 plays.
Disclosure is in third with 144 plays, Fetty Wap is in fourth with 139 plays, and Jamie xx is in fifth with 123 plays.
If you’ve listened to Beats 1 for any length of time you’ll know that its DJs will play any genre of music. However, some are much more popular than others. For instance, more than 1,726 hip-hop/rap tracks have been played so far, as have more than 1,506 alternative tracks. However, electronic is a distant third with 802 plays, while pop is way back in fifth with 575 plays.
What’s really interesting about this data is that of the more than 12,000 songs played during this period, only 3,371 unique tracks were detected. That means each track is played 3.7 times on average, but 18 of the top 20 songs have been played over 50 times.
In addition, despite being a worldwide service, “nearly every song is in English and produced by artists from the US, UK, or Canada,” Quartz found.
