iPhone Lock Screen Exploit Can Reveal Contact Information Without a Passcode

For some, the smartphone is the crux of their day-to-day, holding a host of important, oftentimes sensitive information.

Which is why security is important. Fingerprint readers, passcodes, and other options aim to make getting into a phone that much more difficult for the nefarious folk out there, but sometimes exploits can be discovered that render those security methods moot — even if it’s for a short period of time.

That’s what YouTube channel iDeviceHelp has discovered, and they’ve published a video showing how the exploit works. An attacker would need to have physical access to an iPhone to even have a chance, and from there it’s a combination of calling, sending a message, and Siri to access contact information present on the device without needing to input a passcode.

The attacker must call the phone in question, and then start to send a message. The next step sees the attacker requesting Siri to turn on Voice Over. Once all of that has been done, it really comes down to timing. The attacker must quickly double-tap on a contact information that’s presented, pressing-and-holding on the second tap. If the timing is managed by the attacker, then a keyboard will activate.

The attacker can use the keyboard to input the first letter of a contact name, and then select the Info option that shows up, gaining access to that contact’s info card while the phone remains, technically, locked the whole time.

The testers have reported the exploit to Apple, and the company should be working on a fix. When that will roll out remains to be seen, though.

You can see the exploit demonstrated in the video below.
