Review: Speck CandyShell Fit for Apple Watch

If you’re one of the few, the proud, those of us with an Apple Watch, then you have the distinct privilege of worrying about keeping it looking nice. After all, the Apple Watch is more of a fashion accessory than most other Apple products. You can’t hide it in your pocket without defeating its purpose, so you might worry about its appearance more than with your iPhone. That’s why Speck made the CandyShell Fit.

The CandyShell Fit is meant to cover your Apple Watch when you’re expecting to be a bit more rough than usual. Maybe you’re going hiking, running, or playing a sport; CandyShell Fit will cover your Apple Watch when you need it, and come off easily when you don’t. It’s also available in a few colors that are made to match Apple Watch Sport bands. It comes in both 38mm and 42mm sizes.

The challenge with a case like this is making it easy to put on and take off, but not so easy that it falls off. Also, it can’t be much bigger than the watch itself, otherwise you won’t use it. I think Speck has done a good job balancing these characteristics.

Putting it on is very easy; there’s a cutout for the crown and a button cover for the button. The left and right side of your watch will be very well protected, but there are cutouts for the speaker and microphone holes, so you don’t lose functionality. The digital crown is still quite accessible, and the button is very usable as well. And, as you’d expect, the case protects the screen of the device by extending a bezel upwards. Taking the case off is pretty easy, but it doesn’t seem like you’ll do this accidentally.

The real question is how much protection can this case offer? I’m not 100% sure on that as I’m not willing to be the guinea pig on that experiment. What I can say is that the CandyShell Fit does prevent your watch from being scratched if you accidentally bump into things. One of my biggest worries with the Apple Watch is that I’ll accidentally bump my wrist up against a brick wall and scratch the aluminum, and I’m pretty confident this case would prevent that from happening. And when you’re not worried about that sort of thing (or would prefer the look of an uncased Apple Watch) you can easily take it off.

In short, it’s not a case I’d use constantly, but that’s not the point. I would use the CandyShell Fit to protect the watch when I’m playing sports or just in an environment where I’m extra worried about the watch for some reason. And that’s exactly why you’d by this case. So, if you’re a little worried about scuffing your Apple Watch, you might want to consider the Speck CandyShell Fit. It’s a lot cheaper than buying a new watch.
