Recommending new music for subscribers is one of the biggest features for streaming music platforms.
Whether that’s done through human curation or algorithms running behind-the-scenes, the goal is the same: Offer up new and exciting tracks so people stick around longer. Spotify has its own options with the Weekly Discovery playlist (which updates once a week), and then the “Daily Mixes,” which, as one can guess, update every day. Apple Music has its own recommendations with “My New Music Mix.”
And now SoundCloud can say it offers up regular recommendations as well. The service has officially announced what it calls “The Upload,” which relies on the fact that new music is added to the service on a daily basis. As a result, The Upload is meant to bring the user’s attention to music on a regular, daily routine, based on the music they have listened to or have liked in the past.
Of course, the more a user uses The Upload and likes music, the better the service will get at promoting new music.
“It is available via the Discover tab on web, and in the Search tab on iOS and Android and works by recommending tracks that have been uploaded to SoundCloud within the last few days based on what you like and listen to. The more you listen to on SoundCloud, the better The Upload will surface new artists and music for you.
With the largest and most diverse music catalog around, we want to make discovery on SoundCloud even easier and we’re utilizing machine learning to offer new ways for you to find more music. This new feature is another opportunity for creators on SoundCloud to get their music heard by our global community and a great way for listeners to be on the pulse of what’s next, now.”
The Upload is refreshed every day. It’s part of the SoundCloud Go features list, which pricing starts at $5 per month for a limited library, and offers the standard $10 per month if you want the full streaming experience.
